Will Burris Reveal Strategy for Healthcare Debate?

Sen. Roland Burris. (WBEZ/file)

Illinois U.S. Senator Roland Burris Monday could reveal his plans for the upcoming health care debate. He's scheduled to make a speech this morning at a Chicago hospital.

Senator Burris has attracted a lot of attention in recent weeks for his position of the health care legislation moving through Congress. The Chicago Democrat has said he will only support what he's termed a "strong public option," a government-run health insurance program.

In a speech on the Senate floor last week Burris said, "I will not compromise. I will not stop fighting." But a compromise that lets states opt-out of the plan is expected to be included in the bill being put together by Democratic leader Harry Reid.

Burris has not yet signaled if he would join Republicans in a filibuster of that bill. There are 60 senators in the Democratic caucus, and they may end up needing all 60 to defeat a filibuster attempt.

Burris' plans could become more clear Monday when he visits Cook County's Stroger Hospital to make what his office is calling a "major address."
