McDonald's Profits On the Rise

McDonald's says new, more expensive burgers helped its third quarter profit climb almost 6 percent. That slightly beat analysts' expectations.

McDonald's says its new third-pound Angus burgers helped push sales in the United States over the last few months. The company has been doing well during the economic downturn, in part because of inexpensive items on its menu.

But the Oak Brook, Illinois based company says those domestic numbers could start to flatten out. In a statement, CEO Jim Skinner says he expects sales at U.S restaurants open at least a year to be even, or slightly negative in October. Skinner says the fast-food business is slowing around the globe, even though he predicts McDonald's will continue to see some growth.

The company is delaying the planned opening of about 100 new stores this year - nearly half were supposed to be in China.
